Written to be read. If anything here is unclear, ask us and we'll rewrite it rather than explain it.

What this service is

Taxmint is self-service tax preparation software operated alongside a licensed accounting practice. You prepare your return; the software computes it from the information you enter; the practice reviews and transmits it. You remain responsible for the accuracy and completeness of what you enter, and you sign the return under penalties of perjury.

Figures displayed before a return is accepted are estimates computed from the published IRS tables and the information you supplied. The return of record is the one the IRS accepts.

What we do with your information

We use what you give us to prepare, review and file your returns, to answer your questions, and to keep your records available to you. We do not sell it, and we do not use the contents of your tax documents to train models.

Your Social Security number, your dependants' and your spouse's, and your bank details are encrypted at rest and are never returned in full by our interfaces. Payment card details go directly to our payment processor and never reach our servers.

Your documents are readable by you and by the preparers at the practice assigned to your file. Nobody else can open them, and no other customer's search or assistant can reach them.

How long we keep it

Tax records are kept for at least seven years, which is what the record-retention rules and any later examination require. You can ask us at any time for a full export or for deletion of everything not subject to a retention obligation, and we will complete it within 30 days.

Payment and refunds

You pay at the point of filing, not before. Your price is fixed by the topics you select at the start of the return and does not increase because of later answers. If you have not filed, you have not been charged and you can leave with your data.

Our guarantees

If a calculation error on our side causes an IRS or state penalty or interest charge, we pay the penalty and the interest on presentation of the notice. This does not cover additional tax you genuinely owed, nor errors arising from information that was entered incorrectly or omitted.

If another provider produces a larger refund on the same facts and the same law, we refund what you paid us for that return.

What this is not

Nothing here is legal advice, and the software's explanations are not a substitute for professional advice on a complex matter. Where your situation needs judgement rather than arithmetic — a business sale, a foreign filing obligation, a residency question, an existing IRS dispute — ask for a preparer, and we will tell you plainly if it is beyond what this service should handle.
