Answers, and a person if you need one.

Inside your return, the assistant answers from your own documents and cites the file it read. If you want a human, ask for a preparer and it lands in a real queue attached to your real return. Open your return →

Getting started

What do I need before I start?

Your Social Security number and your dependants', last year's return if you have it (for your prior-year AGI), and whatever forms arrived in the post — W-2s, 1099s, a 1098 if you own a home, a 1095-A if your health insurance came from the Marketplace. You don't need it all at once; the return saves as you go.

Do I have to finish in one sitting?

No. Everything saves automatically, and you come back to exactly the screen you left. Nothing is charged until you file.

Can I switch from another provider?

Yes — upload last year's return as a PDF and we read the AGI, the carryovers and the dependants out of it. The capital-loss carryover is the number people most often lose in a switch.

Documents

How do I upload a form?

The upload panel is on the right of every filing screen. Photograph it flat in good light, or use the PDF your employer or bank gave you. We read it and show you every box we found before anything touches your return.

What if you read something wrong?

You'd see it — the values are shown for confirmation, not applied silently. Correct it on the screen, or decline the whole proposal and type the boxes. The result is identical either way.

What happens to my documents afterwards?

They stay in your document vault permanently, along with your return package and the official Form 1040. That's what makes 'send me a copy of my 2025 return' a download rather than a support ticket.

Filing

How do I sign electronically?

A 5-digit PIN of your choosing plus last year's adjusted gross income — that's the IRS's self-select PIN method. If you don't have last year's AGI you can use an Identity Protection PIN, or file on paper.

When will my refund arrive?

Nine in ten refunds arrive within 21 days of acceptance with direct deposit. Returns claiming the earned income credit or the additional child tax credit are held by law until mid-February, whatever software you use.

What if I can't pay what I owe?

File anyway. The failure-to-file penalty is ten times the failure-to-pay penalty, so filing on time and paying late is far cheaper than the reverse. Ask us and a preparer will set up an instalment agreement.

What if I need more time?

An extension (Form 4868) is free here and gives you until 15 October to file. It is not more time to pay — send what you think you owe with it, and we'll tell you what that is.

After you file

The IRS rejected my return. Now what?

Rejections are almost always a name, SSN or prior-year AGI mismatch, and they're fixable in minutes. We tell you the exact reason code in plain English and what to change.

I got a letter from the IRS.

Send it to us. Your return, the documents behind it and the reasoning for every figure are all on file, so responding is a matter of pulling the record. Audit defence covers three years of correspondence and representation for $39.

I need to change something after filing.

That's an amended return, Form 1040-X. Start it from your dashboard and we carry everything over — you change what's wrong and we file the difference.
